997 Carrera S Performance Upgrades Featuring SOUL, GIAC, BMC & Numeric Racing

Modern Porsches are no stranger to valve-actuated dual-mode exhaust systems right from the factory, but that doesn’t mean they’re able to fully satisfy the eardrums of every 911 enthusiast.
SOUL Performance’s Valved Exhaust for the 997 Carrera–in this instance a 997.1 Carrera S–gives the driver a modest bump in sound quality while its valves are closed, perfect for a peaceful drive through the neighborhood. But with the push of a button, the valves open for a racy, full-throated howl from the 3.8L flat six.
It’s the centerpiece of a well-balanced series of upgrades for this 911. In addition to the growl of the SOUL exhaust, we’re adding a high-flow BMC air filter, a Numeric Racing billet short throw shifter and DME tuning by GIAC.
But first, the exhaust…

The stock valved 997 Carrera S exhaust. The exhaust manifolds and criss-crossing catalytic converters will remain, but the large side mufflers are on their way out.

With time comes rust. Knowing this, we’ll be replacing the existing clamps with fresh ones from Porsche.

Factory Porsche side muffler compared to the SOUL Performance unit. In addition to a better sound and higher flow, a few pounds will also be shed.

The SOUL Valved Exhaust installed on the Carrera S, complete with new clamps for a leak-free (and rust-free) seal.

SOUL’s carbon fiber quad tips will add modern refinement over the aged, factory black tips.

Carbon fiber is just one of three tip options. Polished chrome and black chrome are also available. Cars not originally equipped with the factory valved exhaust can reuse their OE tips if they choose, otherwise a choice of SOUL tips is required for proper fitment.

The final piece of the SOUL Valved Exhaust puzzle is the installation of their valve controller. It allows for the opening and closing of the vacuum-actuated valves from the two included remote controls.

A BMC air filter not only allows a less restrictive flow of air into the 3.8L flat six, it’s also able to be cleaned and reused when the time comes.

Loading in the new tune from GIAC to the DME via the car’s OBD-II port and a laptop. Gains are a modest 10-15 horsepower and lb-ft of torque, but the programming further wakes up the 3.8 with more responsiveness across the powerband. A welcome compliment to the 911’s new exhaust and air filter.

The final, and most tactile, upgrade comes in the form of a Numeric Racing short throw shifter. The factory’s mostly plastic construction pales in comparison to Numeric’s billet machined unit featuring a patented ball bearing operation that is as precise as it is smooth.

It’s a shame the shifter will be hidden by the center console and boot, but the moment you engage it, you’re reminded of what’s underneath.

That’s a wrap! This 997 Carrera S now has more sound, more speed and sharper shifts, making it an even greater daily driver for its owner.
