Installed: IPD’s 992 Carrera Intake Plenum

With the launch of the 992 Carrera, Porsche carried over their 3.0L twin turbo flat six with a few updates here and there for the new model, including a new turbo design and reconfiguring the way air is drawn into the motor.

IPD–developers of aftermarket intake plenums for many Porsche models–also did an update on their own for their 3.0L plenum design.

Once installed, the new plenum will help the 992 build boost quicker down low, and then come alive from 4,000 rpm to redline, with peak gains of 30+ wheel horsepower and 25+ wheel torque at 6,200 rpm. Naturally, the top-end is where the IPD shines as the demand for air increases.

The intake plenum is a rather simple install once you can access it. The nature of modern 911’s is such that there is a lot going on in the back of the vehicle.

Now you can finally begin to see the throttle body, and attached behind it, the plenum.

You can also see one of the biggest ways Porsche reconfigured the 3.0L’s airflow. The dual intercoolers are now where the air filter was located in the previous 991.2 models. Air filtration for the 992 has been split in two, with one filter behind each of the wheel wells (incidentally, roughly where the 991.2 intercoolers were located).

The factory intake plenum with the throttle body removed. From this point there are a few lines to disconnect then it can be pulled out to make way for the IPD.

With the factory plenum out of the vehicle, the difference in shape between it and the IPD is striking. The IPD’s ‘Y’ design will channel air more effectively than the factory ‘T’ style junction.

With the IPD installed, it’s time to put the Carrera back together again.

But that’s not the only item on the menu for today. An Akrapovic exhaust system is also hung in place while the rear bumper is off.
