997.1 Turbo Build Featuring FVD Brombacher’s Level 3 Turbocharger Kit

Even with the 992 and 991 Turbo models offering outstanding performance and modern features, there’s something about the 997, like the models that came before it, that turns heads. With its 3.6L twin turbo Metzger engine, six-speed manual and nimble proportions, the 997 series of Turbos deliver endless fun. (And unlike its predecessors, still allowed you the option to row your own gears.)

It’s also a prime platform for performance upgrades.

With the newest 997.2s now 10+ years old, those years create the opportunity to freshen up and replace old parts with newer, better offerings from the aftermarket.

It also makes a great excuse to go even further in order to keep up with the newer 911’s, as is the case here.

FVD Level 3… PLUS

German-based FVD Brombacher has been tuning Porsches and creating performance parts for nearly 40 years. With their Level 3 package producing 610 horsepower and 594 lb-ft of torque, FVD seriously amps up the performance of the 997 Turbo.

The upgrade includes their upgraded 700 Series turbochargers, sport headers, exhaust and tuning. Yet, in the case of this particular Turbo, the upgrades don’t end there.

The car already had FVD’s sport exhaust installed, but it also already had IPD’s freer-flowing intake plenum in place. Additionally, our client opted for a set of Forge Motorsport wastegates and do88’s y-pipe. A fresh BMC air filter for good measure is also on the menu.

Combined, you could consider this to be a Level 3 “Plus” upgrade.

The FVD 700 Series VTG turbochargers feature 66mm exducer and 47.55mm inducer with a lighter and larger 12-blade compressor wheel for more airflow and quicker spooling.

Using the factory housings, FVD’s 700 Series turbochargers help keep costs manageable while still producing serious horsepower. Their process allows for sending in the factory turbos to be modified by their engineers in Germany, then sent back to be re-installed.

FVD’s stainless steel headers decrease lag and increase power while helping the turbos spool faster. They also reduce weight, coming in at under 10 lbs.

Forge Motorsport’s billet piston recirculation valves (wastegates) replace the plastic factory units (as seen in earlier photos) for greater reliability, longevity and with springs designed for the added boost pressure.

With bigger turbos come the benefit of bigger intake piping. The new do88 y-pipe provides 62% more airflow to the previously-installed IPD intake plenum for more power and greater efficiency.

When putting over 600 horsepower to the ground, the Numeric Racing short throw shifter will provide quicker shifts and solid feedback.

Does a 997 Turbo need all of this to be a fast, fun and adrenaline-inducing ride?

Of course not.

But it doesn’t hurt.
